Some Thoughts
So Saul's qualifications for being king were that he was tall (1SA 9:2). The training he received to be king was nill. His profession was unknown, though he was low enough to go looking for stray animals. It's as if God had picked this man just to show His people what a bad idea a king would be. In other words, as a punishment. None the less, he was God's chosen leader, as mentioned in 1SA 10:1,26. Much later, God's people will be told Romans 13:1-2. We will be reading about Saul until 1SA 31.
